Vale Lynette Eagles 1951 – 2023
Lynette Eagles was a Life Member and former President of Mount Petrie Bowmen. She served two terms as President, 1985 – 1986 and 1988 – 1989.
Lynette’s life in archery commenced in the early 1970s. She started retailing archery gear from her home at Sunnybank Hills before starting a mobile service in a small white Escort van. During this time she was heavily involved with the organisation of the archery competition for the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. Legend has it that the night before the archery competition she had her father doing electrical work and her mother, brother, sister-in-law and her husband Peter setting out targets, score boards and other last minute activities. They don’t do it like that anymore!
Lynette opened her archery retail business, Eagle Archery, at Springwood, in the late 1980s. The Escort van was superseded by a much larger van and Lynette took it all over Queensland and Western NSW, wherever there was an archery competition. Lynette later moved Eagle Archery to Underwood. During this time she was honoured with an award from bow brand Matthews, as their No 1 retail dealer in the world outside the USA. Many longstanding MPB members will remember Eagle Archery well.
In addition to being MPB Club President for two terms, Lynette was very active in coaching and was largely responsible for the first MPB Constitution, which was a necessary precursor to the Club’s move to incorporation in 1988. In 1985 Lynette took the Australian archery team to Seoul, Korea, as Assistant Coach.
Lynette was widely travelled, including to the North Pole, and she was especially well regarded on Norfolk Island where she had a hand in the establishment of the Norfolk Island Archery Association in 1997.
In 2016 Lynette and Peter closed Eagle Archery and retired to Biloela where she continued a modest retail operation. Lynette passed away on 15 November 2023.

Chronicles of ‘Cuddles’ the Coronasaurus
In the era BC (before COVID), Mount Petrie Bowmen welcomed an unnerving new member who, sadly, was nameless.
After some intensive research, our resident taxonomist, Sir Charles Astbury, provided the following taxonomical classification reference.
“Coronasaurus Frewinius, common name ‘Cuddles’, is a genus of carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived 155 to 145 million years ago during the late Jurassic period. The name “Coronasaurus” means “virus lizard” alluding to the unique respiratory dysfunction that was prevalent (at the time of its discovery). It is derived from the Latin ‘coronus’ meaning dysfunctional and ‘frewini’ meaning low scoring.
The first fossil remains that could definitively be ascribed to this genus were described in 2020 by distinguished paleontologist and archer, Lord Keith Frewin.
“As one of the least well-known theropod dinosaurs,” Lord Keith is reported as having said, “it has long attracted attention within archery circles for its unique self-healing properties.”
Coronasaurus was a small bipedal predator. Its mid-section was equipped with a self-healing zone that, had it showed evidence of more puncture wounds, may have led to an alternate classification Coronasaurus Worthius from the Latin ‘worthi’, to score high.”
Ref, C Astbury (Sir), Journal of Unusual Dinosaurs, MPB, 2020
Not withstanding her eccentric social behaviours (if anyone knows the whereabouts of the junior member last seen sharing a butt with Cuddles, please let us know), with time, Cuddles came to be regarded affectionately by some Club members of similar vintage.
Regrettably, some people from an archery establishment in the UK, purporting to be from Merlin Archery, attempted to downplay Cuddles’ paleontological significance by putting forward a ridiculously fake imitation.
While this briefly derailed Cuddles’ credibility with the membership, she was soon back on her feet, with some assistance.
Cuddles is now a valued member of the Mount Petrie Bowmen community and fully co-operates with mandated COVIDSafe strategies.
Recently, Cuddles played a central role in a significant annual event on the MPB calendar – the Donna Miles Memorial Shoot.
Now, definitive proof of the real reason the dinosaurs died out.
Donna Miles Memorial Shoot
On August 10th we remembered late member Donna Miles with a longbow mini clout fun shoot followed by a 36 scored shoot, also using longbows and wood arrows. There were two divisions for the target shoot – longbow owners who shot at 30m, and ‘the rest’, who shot at 20m. Winners of each division received a $50.00 voucher from Abbey Archery. Many thanks to Abbey Archery for their support. Also, many thanks to Bevelyn who catered a sumptuous afternoon tea for the occasion, and to Keith and Paul who masterminded the shoot. There are photos from the shoot on the MPB Facebook Page.
Lara & Jaymie Selected for 2019 Trans Tasman Team
Congratulations to Lara Bezzina and Jaymie Wood who will be travelling to Auckland, NZ this July as members of the Australian Trans Tasman Challenge Team. Don’t forget your thermals girls.
Mustang Owners Club Qld
The Mustang Owner’s Club made MPB their week-end drive destination on a beautiful Sunday morning in May. We had 11 immaculate Mustangs of varying vintage in the car park. One junior member needed a brown paper bag to breathe into after getting the chance to drive one of the cars from the outer to the inner car park. Get in touch if you want to know more about an event for your organisation, family, friends or social group.
2019 Para & VI Championships
In January, Mount Petrie Bowmen proudly hosted the 2019 Para & VI National Championships. This was a first for the Club. 22 competitors were shooting for selection as Australian representatives at international events, or just to achieve a personal best, enjoy the experience, and catch up with friends.
We are excited to announce that Mount Petrie Bowmen will host this tournament again in March 2020. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us than this year.
Chinese Taipei Visit
We were lucky enough to have a group of wonderful and talented archers from Chinese Taipei come and visit us in September at Mount Petrie Bowman as part of a Matchplay invitation. Seen here are Steve Jacobs, Jo Jo, James Gaze, Astin Darcy, Laura Paeglis, Alec Potts, Ryan Tyack, Taylor Worth, Chloe Grabs, Alice Ingley, Nic Kyriazis, Belinda Maxworthy, David Barnes (archer) and Ya Ping Shih at Mount Petrie Bowmen.
All in all it was a great day of shooting with some really serious competition… not saying who won.
Terry Donovan Awarded Order of Australia
Longstanding senior MPB member Terry Donovan, was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2018 Australia Day Honours List. Terry represented Australia at the Olympics three times and has contributed extensively to the development of the sport in Queensland over 40 years.
